A public book-burning might not help hide that book.

According to Techdirt, a group of people in Wisconsin are petitioning a local library for permission to burn “Baby Be-Bop“, the story of a gay teenager.
Of course, by making this big stink about wanting to burn the book (and suing for $120,000 because they were exposed to it), the book is gaining a lot of attention.
The louder they scream about this, the more attention (and sales) the book will see.

You know who also used to love burning books – Hitler.

Wow! Baby BeBop was one of my favorite books back in junior high. I’m in college now, but I still remember how sensitively Francesca Lia Block handled issues of burgeoning sexuality, abuse, drugs, etc. She never shied away from difficult and grown up issues in her books, and she never lied about them. I felt like her books, while fantastical and fun, also gave me a rational, unbiased, and unromanticized look at the major issues in teen life.

I love this book, and the rest of the Weetzie Bat series. I hope Ms. Block receives good publicity and sales revenue from this ridiculous incident.
